What CLA has for you this term?
First up: Thinking of applying for co-op? Or ready to graduate? This series might be for you!
In conjunction with the Ontario Library Association, the CLA-UWO Student Chapter would like to announce a special, two part Academic Library Career Workshop. The first session is "Getting Ready", it will cover how to read academic job postings, how to research positions, write a resume/curriculum vitae (C.V.), compose a cover letter and prepare for interviews. To guide you through this process, we welcome Jim Brett from the University of Guelph. Jim is the Information Resources Librarian at the U of G and the Career Development Co-ordinator for OLA.
When & Where: "Getting Ready" is on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 12-1:15pm in Rm 295 North Campus Building.

Welcome to the Canadian Library Association-UWO Student Chapter website
The CLA Student Chapter has been hard at work all term organizing professional events for MLIS students. We started the term with our Career Development Workshop lead by Ulla de Stricker. The all day event was a great success. Students came away with valuable information on resume writing, cover letters and advice on your their particular career type. Ulla's slides will be made available to all students who were unable to attend or just need a refresher on what was covered.
Our Professional Networking Event was held at the Masonville Branch of the London Public Library. Guests this term included Claire Callaghan from Kings University College, Julie Brandl from London Public Library, Jim Purser from the City of London, Shauna-Lee Konrad from London Health Sciences Center, Liz Mayville from the Oxford County Archives and Paul Klages from the Stiller Center. The event is rather akin to speed dating. Students are seated at a table with one professional, each session runs around 15 minutes giving students the opportunity to ask questions and get a feel for the prospective profession. When the allotted time is up, students move on to the next professional. Each term we include professionals from all areas of librarianship including archives, public, academic, special and government libraries. It is an excellent opportunity to meet professionals in a relaxed, no pressure atmosphere and it gets your name out there! Don't worry, if you missed this terms event, there is always next term! Keep your eyes open for CLA posters around FIMS or check back with our website for upcoming events. Thanks to Jennifer Mason and Janet Hatcher for all their hard work to arrange this event.
This term we were pleased to welcome guest speakers Delilah Deane Cummings and her volunteer co-ordinator Ellen Hobin from the London Public Library. The lunch hour talk focused on community outreach and how to get involved in summer literacy programs at LPL. Thank you to Maria for arranging this event.
As always, the CLA puts on library tours around the UWO campus. This term CLA has organized tours of the Bitove Family Law Library, The Map Library and the Education Library (Thursday, July 29).
The Map Library (downstairs in SSC) was a huge hit!
We had 21 students participate in the tour,
our largest turn out to date!
Here's our Vice Chair Courtney checking out a map.
Two new events this term were the CV writing workshop with Jim Brett from the Ontario Library Association and Mock Interviews. The CV writing workshop was particularly helpful for those wishing to pursue a career in academic librarianship. The CV writing workshop coupled well with mock interviews. For those unfamiliar with the mock interview session, students wishing to participate were sent a fictional job posting complete with timed deadlines and requirements. Resumes were sent to Jim Brett and are being distributed among the professionals who volunteered to interview at UWO. The mock interviews are 1 hour sessions in which students are interviewed by a team of professionals. After the "interview" portion is over, students are given feedback on the resume and interview skills. This is an excellent opportunity for students to hone their interview skills in a no risk situation. Thanks to Jim Brett and the OLA members for volunteering to help us out and to Elizabeth Yates for all her hard work getting these events together!
That about sums up the term so far........keep your eyes open for the final CLA event in August. It will be a good one!
Meeting: May 11, 2010

- Ideas and volunteers for library tours and mentorship program,
- Discussion: Should it be a large or smaller event? Consensus - smaller,
students could get more out of it. Potentially under 50 students. Smaller
group context would encourage interaction. - Agenda of workshop: Up for discussion.
- Date/Time: Location would be an issue if it had to be held in a larger
lecture hall based on attendance. Possibility to run one each term. - Ticket Sales: Do we want to put a cap on the number of tickets? Request
for volunteers at lunch in between classes to sell tickets outside the GRC. - Ticket sales volunteers signed up (attached at bottom of minutes)
Allocation of Roles, and Discussions of Future Meetings
- Discussion of what the roles would include.
- Meetings will start out weekly and switch to potentially every second
